As writers we are writing to a fast reading community who is not very worried about perfection. In fact they seem to be more worried about honesty. Perhaps the writer has found an amazing outlet for her or his seeming preoccupation with the storyline and the written word- Finally! After years of being told “no one makes it as a writer…give up and get a real job” some of us die hards are returning to their passion. This is a little of what I have found so far.
1. Experience counts. This is where the seasoned human/writer can really shine. It is a chance to share your real life experience. You have something to offer. We all do. Just find your audience.
2. Get over yourself. We do not become Ernest Hemingway or Flannery O’Connor on the Web. We become who we are.
3. We all start for free. Yes we give it away. Very much in line with the idealism of the internet as the free information highway, we are giving away our voice. Imagine that, a voice that is just that. A voice.
4. Write write write.
Every time you breathe, write. That is the advice from my friend David who got me into this and who has been giving me the inspiration to be me.
5. Have fun and be authentic. I have found most article takers do not want my lovely research articles. I can save them for my own blog. What people in the world (that is the audience) who are computer bound want is inspiration. What better way to learn to love life 40 and up. I really recommend this for people who have been trying for years to write the great American novel. I started doing the daily writing and living necessary for the novel here. It is working. My creativity is sparked. My life is enhanced. I am conversing with writers and creative thinkers all over the world and I never left my computer.
6. You can do it on a library computer. No excuses. Just do it.
7. Why do it? It will require reading and it helps regulate our writer’s ego and gets to our spirit. It is very interesting and I hope helpful. Remember all you need to know is at your fingertips, so…what are you waiting for, your muse? Ha! Jump start her with daily writing and let the games begin! There can NEVER be too many experiences, or too much wisdom in the world. There is a great need right now for edited, clear, concise writing. In other words your writing and your unique experience.
8. Good luck and I hope to follow you on your path to the core of the writer in you. Namaste!
