How To Craft Your Study Environment?

by Jane Sheeba| Join Jane on Google+

While you are a student, studying is what you are supposed to do in at least 40% of your time. There is no point in studying all the time, because student life is a power packed and fun phase which you can’t afford to miss. In order to make good use of your student time you have to make your study time effective.

One of the most important aspects that influences the effectiveness of your study time is your study environment. Here are some tips to design your study environment.

Can you concentrate?

This is the first and the foremost thing you should take into account when you think about your study environment. Does your study environment help you to focus on what you are up to? Are there things around that distract you? Are there too many people in your room so that you cannot concentrate? You then have to either change your place of study or ask those people to be quiet. Better sync your study time with theirs.

Turn down noise level by politely asking people to do so. Use a color theme in your room that helps you to stay calm and concentrate on stuff.

Minimize distractions

Distractions are everywhere. You cannot run out of the world, but you can minimize them at your study zone. Here are some tips to do it:

1. Put your table facing the wall. You can avoid watching what’s going on in the rest of the world while you study. Keep the wall clean and free of posters. You can have one or two inspiring quotes or pictures and time table to help you with.

2. Off the internet! If you need your laptop or pc on for your studies, unplug the internet. If you don’t need one, just shut it down. Internet is the easy-to-go place for all sorts of distractions.

3. Turn your phone to silent mode or at least minimize the ringer volume.

4. Put a DND not on your door if possible.

5. Let your friends or family know that it is your study time and you don’t want to be disturbed.

6. Choose a time when you naturally will have less distractions.

Postures

Does your study environment help you to take different postures? Some prefer to sit on a chair with their material on the table and study in this posture for hours. Some like to walk around while studying. Some prefer the couch. In any case having one posture throughout your session can be tiring and even boring. It is both good for the effectiveness of your study time and your health (body) to change postures at some decent frequency.

Sit at your chair and table for some time and then move on to your couch and then do some walking. You can do some stretching while you walk. You won’t become tired soon and you won’t be bored with some single view or a posture. This will increase your study time and will maintain your concentration level high.

Resources

Keep all your resources needed for the study session at your hand. Well, not literally but at least have them in a place where you can grab them in less than 15 seconds. Going on a resource hunt is a big waste of time. If you already know that you will need this book, then why not have it at your desk? When you get up and go to the next room for that book, you are out there to be easily distracted.

You may just have a glimpse at a cool ad at the TV and then stay on for the next couple of hours. Or you may see your class mate in the upper corridor struggling to study like you and you both begin a small conversation that lasts until dinner time.

Have all the resources neatly arranged in a clutter-free manner at your convenient proximal distance.

Lighting and Temperature

More often the lighting of your study environment is enough to irritate you. Poor lighting affects your sight. You have to have comfortable lighting both for your good and to make effective use of your study time. Dim lighting will make your eyes tired very soon. Very bright lighting also is not good since it will strain your eyes. Have proper lighting that is not too disturbing for your eye and at the same time enough to keep you awake.

If you can control the temperature of your room (if you have a private heater or an air conditioner, as applicable) then it will be really great. If the temperature disturbs you, then you can manage to control it. If not, then dress in a way that you can cope with the temperature. A comfortable temperature is necessary to boost your brain’s memory power.

Study room design:

Design your study room in a motivating and inspiring manner. Make it bubbly and charming. Study room colors do matter. Don’t use dull colors for posters, chairs, carpets, blinds and so on. Use a good catchy color combination.

If you have a spacious room and if you are ready to spend some bucks in the design, then go for it. Do a google search on ‘Study room interiors’ or ‘Study room designs’ to get your study environment customized to your needs.

Use less entities in the room to make it look clutter free. Use more entities to make it look great. Choose an option that applies to you.
