So… You hate your job. You feel your precious time and amazing potential are being wasted at this particular working environment. You are beginning to dread the time to leave home to go to work and you count the hours, minutes and seconds to leave (until the next day, when you have to do it all over again).
You are exhausted and stressed out and you want out. Well, I’m not going to tell you to just quit. I couldn’t possibly do that. I’m sure you would prefer to live and breath your passions and have them pay for your existence, but still you chose to be there, because you needed your financial independence and a way to survive in the real world.
This doesn’t mean you should stop fighting for your ultimate goals and dreams in life. By all means, keep the flame burning, keep searching for that one special job position that will have you anxiously waiting for a new day of work, that will keep you pumped up and smiling all day.
Consider your current job as a temporary gig, where you must perform as best as you can, until you are able to do something much more fulfilling. Use your spare time to determine your options, to do some research on the matter and to plan ahead.
Meanwhile, here are some tips on being happier on that job you never wished for:
Be grateful
Remember that having a job is necessary to sustain your lifestyle. Economies are failing left and right, and many people are out of a job, feeling scared and hopeless.
Cultivate feeling good before work
On your way there, listen to your favourite music, sing out loud in your car, read an inspiring book on your commute, observe people around you and don’t start stressing out ahead of time.
Don’t allow anyone to change your good mood
Stressed people tend to snap at anyone that comes too close. Give them your best smile and try to spread it all around. Walk away if they keep trying to put you down.
Your boss doesn’t recognize your efforts?
You don’t have to please him/her too much. As long as your customers and your team is happy and the work is done right, you need to congratulate yourself, even he/she won’t.
Avoid stressful traps
If you can’t really run from then, try to relax and consider your options in a positive way. Choose not to get too involved emotionally. Put your game face on.
Make yourself busy
There is always stuff to do and time will fly if you are concentrated on the tasks at hand. You’ll be free soon.
You are not what you do for a living (not yet anyway)
Remember that, when you’re facing complicated situations. You are there as a professional committed to do his/her best.
Be proud of being efficient
As long as you are doing your best, there is nothing more to be asked of you.
Be assertive
If you feel something is wrong or you’re not being treated properly, don’t let it pass. Stand up for your rights with confidence (evidently, without being rude or disrespectful).
Don’t take your work home with you
When you leave is time to relax and to forget all about the “lousy” job. You’ll have time to address those issues when you go back next time.
On your free time, you can finally be yourself. You can dress as you like, express yourself genuinely. No one will be judging you or controlling your actions or thoughts. Hobbies are my life and the perfect reflection of my personality and in my spare time they are kings.
Do you have a lousy job? How do you deal with it?

I was stuck in corporate life for over 20 years. Although I didn’t regret the money or some of the valuable lessons plus experiences learned in that environment, I do think I spent perhaps 10 years too long in that sector. But from my experience there, I can most certainly say that having balance is the key to surviving any job one doesn’t like. It might not be the actual job as it could be the environment, in which case a change in companies would be warranted. But sometimes it is the job even if the environment is good.
What helped me get through my time during all those positions I didn’t really have much passion for is when the end of the day came, it was time to train for my athletic competition side of my life. I looked forward to that each day and it gave me some purpose.
Of course, when I finally left corporate life, it was like a huge weight taken off my chest. Although I don’t want to make it sound like corporate life is bad, it just wasn’t for me for the long term. It can be for a lot of other people. In any case, everyone should strive towards their ideal environment.
Hey Clint,
I know exactly how you feel. It’s not easy to go through the days in a job you don’t really love, but , at the end of the day, your obligations are met and you can be yourself and life for what really makes you happy.
Thanks for sharing your story!

Hey Susana & Jane,
Love the pic, I am a huger fan of the English Bulldog. Your post provides some great tips on dealing with a less than desirable job.
All too often as Clint said in his comment above, we don’t listen to that little voice (intuition) telling us it is time to get out of our current job and move on.

This dog is a cutie, isn’t it? Can help but smile!
I think that inner voice is always there… Sometimes we just dismissed it, because there’s so much going on, we get overwhelmed by responsibilities and fear and just prefer not to listen. Hopefully, at some point we will get busy chasing our dreams.

Well, I’m working at my Father’s company but it is control by my uncle, though my uncle is not that bad (sometime), but I just doesn’t like my Aunt, it doesn’t matter how good I do, she will never appreciate, because in my big family, I’m the dude that never study well in school. I know both my Uncle and Aunt always look me down, but still I always do my best in what job they had given me, though I told my Father about this matter, his always trying to avoid conflict with his brother (my uncle), so it’s almost useless.

Anyway, I had done what I can to the job that wasn’t given, I mean can you imagine the boss son (me) sweeping the floor and arranging boxes in the company? But I don’t care, because I know I had a very good marketing knowledge online and that is something that almost no one in the company knows.
My blog had 100x more traffic then my Father’s company website and the best part is they never wanted me to do the marketing of the company online and rather spend thousands of dollars to hire some bullshit marketer to do the job and the result sucks of course.
But after all… as long as I know my skill, it doesn’t matter if it’s cleaning the toilet because after the work, I’m free to kick ass on anything I want

Hey Wong,
Your’s is a great example of believing in yourself, even if you are unappreciated by the people you work for. Your efforts and talents are not recognized, but you still give your best even in the simplest of tasks. It’s their loss, believe me…
You know your worth and you show it in your blog. Keep rocking it!

Hi there, Susana!
I used to have a lousy job….it was interesting at the beginning when I was starting it, but afterwards I realized I am too good for it and wanted to change it or to make progress. But the job was of such kind where you were not allowed from the boss to progress, as it would mean the boss would have to share more of his incomes with you. So, I was quite in a disrespectful position-my boss knew I need the job to sustain myself…and so, guess what I did? I quit and I was happily ever after! New opportunity came…and I am now happy with it!
It takes guts to quit when a lousy job is your only source of income, but I figured if I am worth of working a job that is good enough for me and later on, I really found it.

Hi Kristina,
I’m so happy that you found your way to a more fulfilling way of live. Some people (unfortunately) do take advantage of employees they know can’t afford to lose their jobs. It takes a lot of guts to just quit and follow your dream. Life is about challenges and lessons - we really need to take those fundamental steps toward happiness.

As much as I want’ to be self-employed and making a living for myself I’m just not there yet. With my SUV payment, OSAP payment and all other financial obligations in my life I would go bankrupt so fast. With that said I do have a plan in place that will allow me to be self-employed over the next 24 months.
This is why I think it’s important to respect your job and make sure you do it to the best of your ability. Sometimes we take work for granted and until it’s gone we don’t realize what we had and how good it in fact was.

Hi Brian,
You’re right. Our “lousy” job may not be perfect, but it’s necessary. I lost mine once and I felt this huge weight being lifted off my shoulders, since it caused so much stress.. Nevertheless, I still felt bad, because I gave it my all and it wasn’t enough and, of course, because I lost my source of income.
Thanks for sharing and I hope one day you’ll also get to follow your dream completely,

This post is so interesting, I guess it’s important that we should value our job if you know it’s were we get
our every day needs.

I don’t have a lousy job but it is occupying most of my time and it is always making me feel stressed. I like the tips you provided especially on the part when my boss doesn’t appreciate my efforts and it is up to me to congratulate myself instead. You are right about appreciating my present work. Though I am stressed I learned to appreciate and enjoy my work.

It’s true to learn how to love your job and definitely there’s a limit in you work. Even if you are a blue collar dude, never ever bring your work to your home.

Hey Ricardus,
I wish we could turn off some kind of switch as soon as we leave our desk at work. It’s so important to disconnect of work issues in your free time. Free time is supposed to allow you to recover and live your life - your true life, when you are your self.

Hi Susana, I would really like to congratulate you for this inspiring post of yours. I suppose most of the persons landed up to a job they are not passionate about. With time they got bored and have no motivation to work and gradually they find lots of faults in their job and get frustrated. I think your post is a great inspiration for all such people( including me). Really you suggest some great ways to deal with a monotonous job.
Hi Daniel,
Thank you for your kind words.
Yep, I know, because I’ve been that person for a good portion of my life. Dealing with stress, frustration or boredom… Anyway, I knew I did my best and at the end of the day I should be proud of myself.
I wish you all the best,

I love all of these tips1 It is so true, even if you hate your work, be grateful that you have work in our economical struggle you are more fortunate than so many others. And I love the power of thoughts … I would recommend to not only fill yourself up with positive thoughts before your work day, but do it on your lunch break and try to spread the positivity around. Tell your co-worker a compliment and see how that changes the mood of the room.
That’s a great tips for everyone. Another way to release your stress. It’s really hard to work if you hate what you’re doing. You have the option to either stop or continue but you often end up choosing the latter. It is because some things are need to consider like if your work is a high paying job.
