A Fiverr Frankenstein That Works

Fiverr is that place where you can hire people to do just about anything small for five dollars. No, you can’t get an entire website built, and I have yet to see anyone offer to mow your lawn for five dollars. But here are a few things you can get done through Fiverr…

  • Have a “Happy Birthday” video sent to someone in a British accent, Spanish accent., Australian accent or celebrity impersonation.
  • Have a logo, cartoon animal, book cover, business card or T-shirt mock-up drawn.
  • Have a postcard sent to someone from Tuscany, New York City, Chattanooga, Brunei, Rome…or just about anywhere.
  • Convert your website to an Android app, turn into a PDF or set up WordPress.

But very few people think about combining gigs - putting pieces together to make a whole new project the way Dr. Frankenstein did with body parts (but not necessarily as “green” as his monster).

So here is an example where I combined two gigs (or three…sort of), but I could have combined seven, to do something pretty original: http://www.seo-writer.com/freelance/fiction-writer.html. It is a short teaser video that lasts one minute and 20 seconds.

A quick note on video… Video marketing is a hot trend for 2013. No surprise, considering that Netflix and YouTube now account for half of US bandwidth usage. Yes, people like video and people respond to video.

Here are the gigs you might want to combine to a similar type of video for your website…

The Fiverr Gig Plan

First Gig

Write a video script. I did this myself. Being a writer, this is what I do best. But if you are not a writer, you can find someone on Fiverr who will “write a script”. Usually these are 30 seconds long, so you might need multiple gigs to cover a longer video.

Second Gig

Get a spokesperson. Unless you are particularly telegenic, you will want to find a video spokesperson gig. Again, these are often just for 30 seconds, so if you want a longer video you might need multiple gigs.

It is worth forking out several fives for a good spokesperson, rather than hiring a cheap one for a single five. I was very pleased with the quality of the job Lisa Marie did for me.

Third Gig

Get animation. Here is the part that many people really don’t think about. A spokesperson can be cool, but how about breaking it up with some animation? There are all sorts of animation gigs.

For my video, I chose a “white board” animation, because I wanted my spokesperson to be drawn. Crashonit from Romania did a great quality job with this for me.

Fourth Gig

Do a voiceover. If you add animation (or graphs or images or anything else to the video, you will need a voiceover to describe these images. This might be your spokesperson, as it was in my case, or you might prefer a different voice (perhaps of the opposite gender or of a different style).

For example, if you are presenting a gutsy, street-talk video, but want to show some graphs that come across with authority, you might want a very different type of voice or even accent.

Fifth Gig

Background music. I opted not to have background music for my video, but if you are planning a presentation that does not involve talking through the whole video, a music-for-your-video gig would be helpful.

Sixth Gig

Design a logo. If you do not already have a logo, then now is the time to design one, because your video should include a logo. There are plenty of logo gigs on Fiverr. I already had a logo, so I skipped this step.

Seventh Gig

Promote the video. I know that the folks at Fiverr will not like to hear this, but I really don’t like using gigs to promote things. This is one activity where you really do get what you pay for as far as quality is concerned (you generally get good quantity with Fiverr promotion gigs, but I have found the quality often lacking).

However, if you don’t have the time or you don’t have the know-how or you don’t have the inclination to promote the video yourself, or you feel that an extra push could help, there are tons of online marketing gigs to choose from.

Combine these seven gigs, or at least those that you need (three of them, in my case) and you end up with something that definitely is unique enough to grab a viewer’s attention.

I definitely agree with you on utilizing all these Fiverr gigs to promote your business and brand but I also think that the tools there for exposure and advertisement lack quality.

Hi David, Fiverr has now evolved into a platform which demands innovation for success..I remember during the initial days of Fiverr there were lots of opportunities for providers because several territories were left uncharted..Now there is huge competition there and the best way to capture attention is to offer innovative gigs…Also the title of the gig and how it is presented also influence the rate at which one will be hired.

It is like anything. Just putting your name in is not enough. You have to promote yourself.

I use Fiverr for some of the little and boring things I’ve to do. You’ll be really surprised to see what people are willing to do for $5. Some gigs are really of good quality and offer great value!

Yes, Fiverr is great for things you can’t do, but also for things that would take you too long to do because you don’t do them often. Folks on Fiverr are set up to do those things, so they can bang through them a lot quicker than someone who usually does other things.

There are some gems in Fiverr, but I see a lot of duds. I think however, doing something like this is not bad… I am able to write scripts for video and even be a spokesperson. At the moment, for myself, I get a lot of people volunteering to do these things for me for free. Or I ask if they can… like recently I asked some well known bloggers to do introduction sound bytes for my podcasts and have gotten back some recordings. Of course, if they ask… I will return the favor. :)

5 dollars is more than enough to earn for a gig. Fiverr just offers a pretty deal for someone who needs part-time money and extra income. But what you just shared is something special. It’s like using Fiverr in another level. Thanks for sharing this.

Fiverr is a wonderful place to get cheap services but some of them are just as the say goes “You get what you pay for”. It’s really nice how they’re improving the quality of stuff sold through their platform and I believe the customer level system would filter out some of the crap out there.
