Alexa Rank: How To Get Your Blog A Sexy Alexa Ranking

Alexa Rank

Alexa rank is one of the golden standards that decide a website’s worth in terms of traffic.

Alexa gives every site a rank and unlike the Google pagerank, for the Alexa rank, the lesser the better. The #1 site on Alexa’s list is Google (not surprising, eh?)!

Well, if your website has a decent Alexa rank then it will be well respected on the web. Especially for advertising profits, a website’s Alexa ranking is one of the factors that decide the price of the ad space at that website.

Before we talk about how to boost your alexa rank, let’s dig a little deep about what this website ranking algorithm is all about.

So, what is Alexa rank and what does it mean?

Basically, alexa rank is an algorithm that grades or ranks websites based on the amount of traffic the website gets. In Alexa’s own words, here’s the definition:

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources, and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach).

Think you’re cool with Alexa ranking if you get decent website traffic? Think again.

Take a good look at the definition above and not all of your website traffic is counted in calculating Alexa rank, but only that portion of the traffic that uses the Alexa toolbar.

So basically, the Alexa traffic rank takes into account the number of people visiting your website that has the Alexa toolbar installed on their browsers.

That’s inaccurate, right? Yes it is. But still, just like Google Pagerank, the Alexa traffic rank number is not just seen as a mere number - even if its inaccurate.

Many advertising agencies, SEO companies, guest bloggers and bloggers who are on a hunt for building links look up the Alexa rank as one of the metrics that represent the standards of a website.

So unfortunately even though you know that Alexa rank is somewhat inaccurate, you have to go for it :) I’m not saying that you should be obsessed by this number. But doing stuff to make sure that your blog has a decent (sexy) Alexa rank will surely help.

Publish high quality content, consistently

Now don’t give me that look :) I know - you turn to any blog seeking advice to improve website traffic, or increase page rank, or to become an authority - everybody says the same thing: Publish quality content!

Is that annoying? If you hear everybody saying that, there are two things:

1. It is highly crucial.

2. It works for all those who keep saying it.

And I put it first - even before you think of any “tactic” or a magical shortcut to decrease that Alexa rank number publishing high quality content is a robust strategy (not just a tactic).

Publishing high quality content in a consistent manner helps improve your Alexa rank with no extra effort.

Blog commenting improves Alexa rank

Yes it does :) and that’s sweet news because we bloggers do comment on related blogs as part of our blogging routine. We do blog commenting in order to network with other bloggers and their readers and also to build backlinks.

While doing so, we are also improving our Alexa rank! And that’s good news right?

Consistent blog commenting can improve your Alexa rank in a quite consistent manner. I’ve experimented this on my blogs at various times.

Don’t take my word. Just go experiment yourself. Track the improvement of your Alexa rank as you indulge in a substantial amount of blog commenting say, for a week and watch the magic :)

Alexa toolbar

Remember I told you in the beginning that Alexa uses its own toolbar to track the amount of traffic to any site? So why not use your own visits to your site to improve the rank?

I know this may sound as if you are manipulating the Alexa toolbar rank - but I won’t say you are. Unless you install the toolbar and go refresh the page 100 times. Even so, you cannot manipulate the result this way because, see below in Alexa’s own words:

Multiple page views of the same page made by the same user on the same day are counted only once. The page views per user numbers are the average numbers of unique pages viewed per user per day by the visitors to the site.

Yes, you can still manipulate your Alexa rank by changing your ip for different visits and do all sorts of nasty stuff - but you’d better focus on creating killer content, promoting it, networking with other bloggers and indulge yourself in activities that will actually benefit your blog :)

Alexa toolbar is available for Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

By installing the Alexa toolbar you can make your own visits count, and you can also “watch” the improvement of your Alexa rank.

Note that improving your Alexa rank by installing the Alexa toolbar is just a tactic - you are just counting your own traffic as traffic - which is right in a sense. But at the same time you cannot actually judge the genuine rank of your site. Then again, since Alexa is not counting everyone and only counts those that have the Alexa toolbar, I guess this makes sense.

Just keep in mind that this technique simply helps in improving Alexa rank; that is the scope of this post anyway.

Other little things to improve Alexa rank (these might not be your cup of tea)

Get reviewed to improve Alexa rank

Even though getting reviewed does not directly help in improving Alexa rank, it will help in some manner. Get some buddies to review your website or blog at Alexa and reciprocate by reviewing their sites.

If you have a handful of decent reviews, that is a good item on your site’s CV.

Asian socials

Alexa has lots of fans in Asia (I don’t know why) and a lot of them use the Alexa toolbar.

If you manage to drive those people to get to your website from their browser (with toolbar installed) then it will give a boost to your Alexa ranking.

Make Alexa a category

Blog or write about Alexa. If you have good in depth articles related to Alexa, then use them on your blog. Most importantly, making Alexa as a category will help a lot.

Drive webmasters to your site

If you can blog about stuff useful for webmasters, great! If not, try to buy advertising in webmaster sites or forums so that you target the webmaster population and drive them to your site. Alexa loves this and your ranking will improve decently.

Watch your site’s speed

Just like any other metric, your Alexa rank can also be affected if your site loads slow. Just imagine if people have to wait for minutes before your site gets loaded. They simply won’t come back again.

Since Alexa rank is traffic based rank, here you have to please people. So all your backlinks won’t help if people stop visiting your site because of poor loading speed.

You can use a content delivery network (CDN) like Cloudflare.

Alexa website ranking: Takeaway

I’d like to insist on one thing here - do not get obsessed by the Alexa traffic rank number. Your Alexa rank is not equal to the amount of traffic you get on your blog.

But working to improve your Alexa website rank has the following benefits:

  • You can earn more on advertising income, since advertisers look for sites that have a good Alexa rank.
  • You will be perceived as a good quality blog (although I don’t agree with this!).
  • By working to improve your Alexa rank you will also improve some other nice metrics like Google Pagerank, backlinks etc.

It was indeed a very useful piece of information. Tech bloggers can write about Alexa or attract webmasters to improve their rankings, but is there any such tip for non-tech bloggers also to boost their Alexa Rankings?

    • Pankaj Gupta @ BlogDefined.comPankaj Gupta @ BlogDefined.com says

Yes you are right. It is easy for tech blogs to get higher alexa ranking in less time because most of the webmasters uses the toolbar. It is difficult for non tech blogs to get better alexa and that’s why alexa ranking is not reliable.

      • Jane SheebaJane Sheeba says

        Hi Pankaj and Nandan,

Alexa should find another way to track the traffic. It only counts the traffic to your blog through the toolbar. So those who have installed the toolbar and visits your site will be counted. Others won’t be :)

        Jane.

        • Olawale Daniel says

          Helpful piece Jane.

We need good Alexa rank for our blogs to gets better popularity and people these days prefer to visit websites that falls below the 100k rank to others beyond that level. And focusing on Asian traffic at times would help us improve rankings as you have said. That’s awesome piece. Thanks for that.

hi jane, Well, you’re right, I tried that traffic from forum trick and it worked like magic. Not only my alexa dropped 10k per day but most of my traffic came from that single thread that I created.
          Great tips thanks :-)

    • DhruvDhruv says

Alexa Rank is improved when people having Alexa toolbar installed in their browser visits your blog…

Alexa calculates only traffic from the Alexa Toolbar…

Also, if your site links are increasing time to time, then also Alexa Rank will be improved..

One of my blog which was getting more than 10k visits daily was not below 100k Alexa rank mark…

So, I don’t believe in Alexa ranking system..

But yea, when it comes to selling a site.. People do look for the Alexa Rank…

For selling purpose, its the first thing that buyer will notice!

I agree with Nandan. It very easy to get well ranked in Alexa for webmaster websites because the every webmasters uses alexa tools. If you have such tips for non-tech then please share with us.

  3. A. Tatum Jr says

I hadn’t heard of the Alexa redirect before, but the question I have is there any real proof that just using the toolbar and changing your home page really helps?

    • Jane SheebaJane Sheeba says

      Hi Tatum,

Alexa monitors your traffic through the toolbar. So your Alexa traffic rank actually represents the number of people visiting your site through the toolbar. So if you have the toolbar installed and have your site as the homepage, every time you open the browser, your homepage will load and that will help a lot.

      Jane.

  4. Glorious BloggerGlorious Blogger says

Alexa score is indeed a nice tool to show off your website or blog but I find it to be really inaccurate, especially when you are comparing blogs in different niches.

    • Jane SheebaJane Sheeba says

      Cristian,

It is so inaccurate. You don’t have the actual traffic stats. Only people who visit your site through the toolbar are counted. But this stat is still valued a lot by advertisers and other sponsors. Can’t help it :)

      Jane.

  5. Ricky says

I agree with Glorious Blogger that Alexa is not that accurate. For example, i once get much traffic to my blog compared to the past where only few of visitor come to my blog, but Alexa rank does not improved by that huge traffic. It seem like Alexa rank is mostly influenced by the traffic drove by visitors with installed Alexa toolbar.

    • Jane SheebaJane Sheeba says

Exactly Ricky. So you cannot use Alexa rank to analyze your true traffic; it is not true indeed. Google analytics helps you on this.

      Jane.

  7. Steve@Internet Lifestyle says

It is definitely nicer to have an Alexa ranking than not have one, it is a nice form of social proof. On the other hand I am not sure if it is worthwhile really “pursuing it” beyond installing the toolbar.

As you pointed out, it is pretty inaccurate since the bulk of the data are from those with the toolbar installed and there is a definite asian/webmaster bias there.

500,000 Alexa for a blog about flowers is likely more actual traffic than a 50,000 alexa blog about “webmasters tools”

It is a decent rule of thumb and something nice for a “rule of thumb” to compare your traffic to other bloggers in the same niche (which PR certainly doesn’t do). But it doesn’t do anything past being “one” factor in pricing ads for the site.

Anyway, even though i said all that, it is nice to “look” good and installing the toolbar and at least taking a moment to try to “rank” certainly can’t hurt (as long as no one gets bogged down by it) so great guide to showing how to do this.

    • Jane SheebaJane Sheeba says

      Hi Steve,

Thanks for adding value as always. It is a great idea to compare Alexa ranks within the same niche. This at least gives a somewhat closer idea of what the ranking really means :)

      Thanks for stopping by.

      JAne.

  8. Shaan @GeekyStuffs says

These are nice tips…But from my own experience, getting reviewed just contribute nothing to improve the Alexa ranking.

If you will check then, you will find that many top Alexa ranking blogs and sites are having very few reviews and very low star ranking too.

    • Jane SheebaJane Sheeba says

      Shaan,

Getting reviewed doesn’t help directly improve the ranking. But if someone finds your blog through the toolbar (it has a search option, I bet many use it) then they will judge your site based on the number of good reviews you have. They can then bookmark your site and visit it often; this will improve your ranking indirectly.

      Jane.

  9. Paul Salmon@Technically Easy says

I don’t usually concern myself too much with Alexa rank. I have the toolbar installed, but that is all. I don’t find Alexa rank particularly accurate in any way. I have seen blogs with half the traffic of my blog, but they have a much better Alexa rank. I think blogs and sites geared towards a blogger or webmaster tend to do better with Alexa ranking since many of their visitors would usually have the toolbar installed.

For as long as advertisers use Alexa as one of their metrics to look for potential publishers, Alexa will always be important. Also, tehre are many thing we can do with the information Alexa provides and one should only know how to use them.

One of the things I found that improved Alexa very well is to get traffic from as much different countries possible. This helps, really. And BTW, thanks for the heads up on creating a category just for Alexa. Did that just now :)

Lastly, I am still confused about the impact of using redirects from Alexa. Does that not affect your rankings on search engines?

I guess the visitors of the website are who improve the page rank !! we can’t assume that we can get it better because the visitor must install the Alexa toolbar.

Hi Jane, thanks for the tips. But i think Alexa rank is nothing more just numbers. It doesn’t effect on your SE and it is easy to manipulate through fake hits with some proxy bots.

  55. tekkaus says

Wow…you do get across the point. But like you mentioned, Alexa rank is not accurate and it can even be manipulated. However we still need to improve it because it is one of the most important benchmarks for bloggers and other webmasters. :)

I have tried many ways to improve my Alexa ranking. However, I’m not doing well of it. I think the traffic is the key factor of the Alexa ranking. In my opinion, I will focus on how to drive the traffic with quality content. Thanks for sharing the post!

Could not agree with these points more.

Alexa is indeed the yardstick that establishes the credibility of a blogger or a website owner in the cyber arena. Keeping these points in the mind will indeed make the path ahead a bit smoother.

    Thanks for this wonderful share.

This was relevant information, very useful :) Is it important that the content be distinct and the idea be new to get traffic on a blog? Will that count in getting a good Alexa rank?

  61. BrianBrian says

Great article, very informative. Do you know how much you ranking will improve by installing the Alexa Toolbar? Is it significant or minimal from your experience?
    Thanks!

Again you prove the content as King by mentioning its importance repeatedly.
Many people say that Alexa rank/PR doesn’t matter: True, but in a long term, it can become a measure to prove site’s authority and value.
So, instead of worrying about Alexa rank/PR, naive bloggers must start working hard on creating creative content!
Thank you, Jane, for just another great share. I think you have first time written a post dedicated to Alexa rank. Keep it up!

      Hi Jane
I think this is a way off for me yet but a decent alexa rank is what we all aspire too. I have two blogs now mymainone is creeping up the rankings and I did look at where it was ranked and there were too many numbers in it so I didn’t look any further. I did write it down though so I should check to se if it had changed much.

      Great insight thanks lee

Many people say that Alexa rank is nothing to worry about but still if you ask a webmaster or an internet marketeer then he would know how obsessed we are with it. I always have my alexa sparky installed in my firefox.

    Hello
I have seen many such posts on How to Decrease Alexa in months. This one is another such post but completely different. Really informative. Blog Commenting really works, even publishing posts daily lowers the Alexa ranking. Getting a Alexa rank of 1 lakh is really not that tough. Sharing posts on social sites also helps a lot.

Thanks for sharing this Jane. I agree with all your points. We should all worry about Alexa, this is what advertisers look at before they contact anyone. I will work again on these points and get back to you if i need any help.
I have now subscribed to your newsletter and now ready to read your free ebook. You will be seeing me here more often so be ready hahaha.
    Many thanks,

    Hi Jane,
Such an interesting article again! I’m wondering about one thing though. What percentage of all Internet users have Alexa bar installed. Does anyone know it? Before I started “doing” SEO and stuff I’d had absolutely no idea that there is such a thing called Alexa Toolbar. That’s why I suppose most of its users are only those who know a lot about SEO, Internet marketing, Internet advertising etc. If this is true, Alexa Rank may have absolutely NO value for some niches e.g. niches about dog training were neither website owners nor websites’ visitors have no idea about AR. I saw some sites with AR at about 5 000 000 and these sites make huge money.

Jane - This is a great post! I have been working on improving our sites\’ Alexa score for about 6 months. I have has some success, but your additional ideas gave me some further stuff to do!I also appreciated your inclusion of the specific way that Alexa tallies up the rank - I did not know it was a rolling three month measure. Further, I always wondered if when I was working on my site and posting, if I wasn\’t affecting the apparent traffic - good to know that when we visit our own site, it doesn\’t really affect it

  73. EdwinEdwin says

You’re right about the accuracy and for some advertisers and webmaster alexa ranking still matters in evaluating a site.

Great article! I actually track the top 100 travel blogs on my site using Alexa as one of the three factors. One thing I’ve noticed that really impacts your Alexa score is where you are based geographically. When I was in South Korea the score for my site was below 20K but now it’s skyrocketed to over 40K.

I’ve personally found that Alexa’s traffic stats are horribly inaccurate. Most of the time, they err on the “more” side, i.e. more traffic, more page views, etc.

They really should find another way to track traffic than using their own toolbar.

    Regards,
    JR John
