Email Marketing: Make These Mistakes. Damage Your Reputation, Seriously

Simple Email Marketing Mistakes That Could Damage Your Purpose And Reputation

If you’re a regular reader of my writing, then you’d have probably heard me saying this term over and over: Email marketing is golden.

Yup it is!

You may have heard about various new and shiny marketing strategies and tools to help promote your blog or business. But email marketing still works and it indeed works much better than any other marketing strategy.

Why? Because….

Email marketing is more personal, more targeted and more effective than any other marketing strategy [Click to tweet this if you agree!]

Now, the purpose of this blog post is to share a few simple email marketing mistakes that you could be making without realizing the bitter fact that you are ruining your reputation.

While the mistakes themselves are so simple the effects are BIG. So these mistakes should not be taken so lightly, especially when it comes to a marketing channel like email marketing where you get a more personal stream to connect with your prospects.

You don’t want to ruin your chance to truly connect with your prospects and build a loyal fan base, do you?

So, I am going to talk about the mistakes right away!

Mistake #1: Using a very formal name

Don’t get me wrong here. Yes you need to use a professional sender’s name for your emails. Names like [email protected] or [email protected] are really unprofessional names to send out a newsletter representing your prestigious business.

At the same time using a very formal name will destroy the whole purpose of email marketing - the ability to connect more personally with your readers. Preferably, the sender’s name should be from a real person and not from a company.

Using a company name is fine, but you should make sure that your email sounds as if it is sent from a human being and not from a bot.

Your email should also sound as if sent from you (the real person representing the business) and not from a bunch of staff who work at your company.

So while you try hard so much to maintain your professionalism in your emails, also do make sure that your emails are realistic, personal and human.

I could send emails to my newsletter subscribers that either read “Message from Problogging Success” or “Message from Jane” - which one do you find personal and real? You get the idea.

Mistake #2: Sending only HTML mail (not including text version)

This is a no-brainer, yet so many internet marketers fail to include a text version of their email in their campaigns.

In almost all the autoresponder services, this option is available at the click of a button. For instance in Aweber, you just have to turn on the plain text auto generation feature .

Your email list will consist of a list of people who can receive HTML messages and also people who cannot receive HTML messages. Some people simply won’t prefer to receive HTML emails because they are clunky and they are slow.

If you do not include a text version of the email you will miss out those people in the list.

Further, when it is so easy to include a text version, what’s stopping you?

Important thing to note

It doesn’t matter if you are sending out a plain text mail, or a HTML mail, but the person who chose to receive only text email will not be able to see the links embedded via HTML. Let me give you an example:

Email marketing mistakes html sample

So, you get the idea! The best way to include links in a text email is to embed the raw urls (like this > http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/email-marketing-mistakes/). I usually do both - add hyperlinked urls as well as insert raw urls into email body so I can cover both HTML and text only viewers.

Mistake #3: Send bulky emails

Bulky emails are a pain. They could easily annoy your subscribers. Some might not even be delivered properly.

So avoid attaching big files/images or including heavy images within your email or as attachments.

Also it is important that you use a light email template that is not bulky.

Bulky emails have a higher chance of getting bounced. They may also load very slowly thus testing the patience of your subscribers.

Mistake #4: Unethical

Well this one is neither a simple nor a small mistake. This one is BIG.

I’m talking about those who buy email lists from others and keep sending those people in the list, their own marketing emails.

First, you don’t have their permission. They signed up for a different list with a different expectation in mind. So if your start sending them your emails, even if they are relevant to their expectation, it is still not ethical - just because it is not a good manners to access someone’s bedroom unless you’re invited to :) (Hope I made a good analogy here).

So if you are one of those who buy lists and then start sending emails to those people, you need to stop it now.

This will put you in trouble quite soon.

I ruthlessly mark such emails as spam. So will your subscribers.

Mistake #5: Un-targeted emails

If your email autoresponder service provides you an option to set up multiple email lists (like Aweber which allows you to have unlimited lists), then USE IT.

If you build just one email list but have different marketing purposes, it just won’t cut it.

Or if you do not need multiple lists, you can still have one list but segment it effectively in order to better target your emails.

For instance, you may separate and save a small group of people who actively open a particular type of email and start sending more emails of the same type to that list.

This way you are able to segment out people with particular interest and send emails that match with their interests.

You can greatly boost your email conversion rates using this technique.

One of the beauty of email marketing is that you can target and then target some more, thanks to the nice features offered by email autoresponder solutions.

Takeaway

Email marketing works great even today; even if it is thought of as old school stuff by most marketers.

You may not get desired results with your email marketing campaigns if you do not do it effectively. You might be making any of these mistakes given above.

So buckle up and double check to see if you are making any of these mistakes.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

If you want to start off with email marketing I highly recommend Aweber and GetResponse (I’ve tried both of these and am extremely happy with them).

    Hi Jane,
Power tips here! Avoid sending massive, overloaded emails. Many people won’t bother with clicking on your subject line if prior emails took too long to download.
Stay on topic. Send out targeted messages persistently, but don’t over do it.
I like 1 newsletter per week. Some prefer a more frequent mailing. Whatever your list craves, because you are writing for your list not yourself.
Spare the pitches. Provide real value to your list. Solve problems. Ask questions.
Engage. Many of my most well read emails were engaging messages. People like a 2 way street, and want to be heard.
    Thanks!
    RB

“People like a 2 way street, and want to be heard.” - very true Ryan. People always love to be heard and the most responsive people are the ones with whom I communicate a lot :)

Hi Jane, I’m using Aweber too and find those segmentation features very useful. There are so many ways that you can create segments to target people based on the way they signed up, or the country they live in or even based on the links they have clicked on. Thanks for these added tips - great info.

Adding personal touch is essential for email marketing.
Hence, I agree with the mistake #1: Using a very formal name.
It does sound like a bot.

    Hi Jane,
It’s amazing how many people think buying a list of names and spamming them is perfectly acceptable. Of course, this is not only a bad idea. It’s ineffective. On the positive side, what would you say is the most effective technique in email marketing? Can you share your thoughts in the comment section of BizSugar with our entire community?

  • http://www.latesttechnologyupdates.com/ Massjo

Of all these the worst one, in my opinion is the first, as sending with do not reply, not only makes it impossible for your subscribers to ask anything, but nowadays ISPs usually give value to the fact that subscribers reply to your emails, so making it impossible will give some negative points that can add to your score and end up your newsletters out of the inbox.

    Hey Jane,

#4 by far is the worst to me. Its bad enough you are spamming peoples email accounts.

People keep doing it which means the conversions may be worth it but the will hardly build relationships and trust from majority of those list.

Relationships drive conversions, brings repeat traffic and will help build your authority.

I have found that keeping your emails conversational is a good way to drive the people on your list to take action.

    Hi Jane,

Regarding the mistake #4 - While I’m not a fan of buying or selling an email list, I don’t agree that it is always a mistake or unethical. Basically there are 2 main types of mailing lists: commercial mailing lists and ezines. While buying a commercial mailing list is always a mistake, selling or buying an ezine - a real ezine - isn’t the same thing.

The real ezines are like the offline magazines. Do you consider unethical the fact that you subscribed to your favorite magazine “X” and then the magazine is bought by someone else (different owner) or the editor-in-chief leaves the magazine and someone else is hired? If you don’t like the new editorial policy, that’s another story, but still nothing is unethical. The same for ezines. Sometimes the online and offline world are not very much different ;-)

    Adrian

P.S. One more thing… if you’re an ezine publisher and… when you collect the email addresses you promise that you’ll never sell them, then that’s an exception… In such case, yes, selling them is unethical and buying them is a mistake. But if you use another popular promise - “I hate spam just as much as you” (like you use!) - then it isn’t unethical to sell that ezine. You didn’t promise that you won’t sell it ;-) In the same situation (the last one), also it isn’t a mistake to sell a commercial mailing list, but it is a mistake to buy that mailing list. As I already mentioned, the ezines and the commercial mailing lists are different and they should be treated accordingly.

P.P.S. Naming ezine the marketing messages sent to a commercial mailing list doesn’t automatically make those marketing messages an ezine. That’s why I mentioned in my comment the term “real” ezines.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Adrian, When I subscribe to the ezine and if the company is sold, I am still on the same list that I subscribed to and I am responsible for that - coz I subscribed. But if the Ezine company sells my email (mostly in this case, for money) to other companies, then it is unethical FOR SURE! They don’t have my consent in this case. If the company is sold, then the email list can be sold together, of course - because the list is an asst of the company. But if the company is selling my address for profits, I call that unethical.

      Thanks for your comment :)

For me untargeted emails are the worst thing.
Though I don’t have an email list so there is no question of sending any emails. But I am subscribed to a lot of lists and I get a lot irritated when someone sends an email completely different from its topic.
Imagine an email from a tech blog promoting hosting services. Such emails are the worst.

Jane, what can I tell you ? I haven’t an internet business, I don’t know English so well for good blogging, I haven’t a website, and most importanely, I haven’t money that I could start any of these things.
I struggle for the survival of my family in this beautiful country whose people robbery every government which grabs the authorities (and toggles only two parties).
I wish you luck in your job, and I’m so tired ……

These are serious tips for any one who is taking a start with email marketing. I agree with your points, and personally agreed on including the HTML version of an email.

I have seen leaking out of email subscriber lists between fake advertisers or at least the publishers who sale their readers just for the sake of some bucks.

    Hi Jane,

These are definitely some great tips about how to use email marketing. My main thing is that I don’t want to send too many emails to my list.

I know that I hate it when I get bombarded by a ton of emails. Especially if they are real spammy. I will definitely take these tips into consideration and see if I can improve my email marketing strategy.

Thanks for sharing, have a great day.

Awesome Post Jane! I’ve been told that some of the biggest Internet “Guru’s” by Email Lists from other marketers because this is quick way to build their list! Honestly I’ve thought about it but never bought an a list from anyone, I usually build my list the old fashioned way through marketing, advertising and building relationships.

    Hi Jane,

Thanks for sharing this important information.

In addition, I have come to discover that the use of Images should not override the content of the Email being sent. Most images don’t usually open in the client’s/target inbox because different browsers have different ways of handling images.

It is best to be simple, polite and go much more with text.
