How To Identify A Reliable Web Host For Your Blogging Business

Reliable web hosting

Whenever you think about starting an online business, the first thing that comes to your mind is the name of the site and its e-location or web address.

Well, you should research your market to find out a good domain name (by managing to include the primary keyword in your domain name). Once you’ve decided on the name of your website and the domain name, the next biggest question is: Where to host your website?

Web hosting is a serious booming business, thanks to the thousands of new websites being started every day. I’m even thinking of starting a web hosting business lol (just kidding).

Anyways, there are always two groups of people -

  • those that prefer free web hosting for various reasons, and
  • those that say ‘NO’ (I mean, a big one) to free webhosting and go for paid hosting.

Now these two groups always argue in favor of themselves and against the other group. Let me make one thing clear (this is MY opinion).

If you are blogging for fun or as a hobby, you can surely fit with free hosting. You can create a blog in minutes with Blogger, WordPress.com, Tumblr and many others.

On the other hand, if you want to treat your blog as a business and get some income (full time or part time) from it, then you have to have a self-hosted blog. In other words you need to pay for your hosting.

I’ve discussed the following story of mine in many interviews and guest posts. But its worth mentioning again. I lost my two blogs on blogger. I’ve spent about an year on those blogs and they got simply shut down one morning. And all my attempts to bring them online failed!

So if it is free, it is not yours. Oops, and I forgot another recent story. One of my Tumblr blogs got suspended as well.

Identifying a reliable web host

So coming to the core topic of this post, if you’re looking out for free or cheap (both sound as synonyms to me), then you are not being serious. And you’re not being responsible about your business.

Why is “paid” reliable. Well, nothing is reliable, just to say. But when you pay for something you got someone to question and someone to work for and fix things since you’re a PAYING customer.

If its for free no one is gonna bother. There is no need for someone to bother, unless they’re being so nice (there will always be a catch).

Secondly, paid web hosting is not only about reliability, but it is also makes your blog/website yours. With free web hosting it is not the case.

Thirdly, you absolutely have no or very limited flexibility with free web hosting. You cannot tweak your blog’s design, SEO or any other features to your taste and requirement. You have so many restrictions on top of you.

Is “flexibility” related to “reliability”? Of course. You never know when those restrictions could change or could be altered by your web host. Since there are rules, you abide by them. The rules could suddenly change one day, you might never know and you could be violating those rules already.

The web hosting company can suspend or delete your blog simply because you were not abiding by their rules.

But going for a paid web hosting doesn’t solve your problems completely

While paid web hosting can be more reliable when compared with free and cheap web hosting, not all paid web hosting companies are reliable. Here are some “signs”.

Check the reputation of the web hosting company. Is it a company that has a good history and good reviews from other users?

Check out the policies/terms of service of the web hosting company. If possible look for a page that lists their policy changes. If you find that the company is changing policies too often and is making drastic changes every time, you cannot rely on such a company.

Does the company offer web hosting plans at various levels? Like shared, VPS, dedicated - and even various sub-plans in each level, like Hostgator, for instance, which offers Hatchling, Babycroc, and similar sub-plans on the shared plan? This is important because, you should be able to choose the right plan for your type of business. Not all businesses are equal and you cannot go with the floods here.

Also you should have the option to upgrade or downgrade at any point, if needed. You should see that your web host offers this facility.

Spend some time to research about the web hosting companies that are available. Read reviews, analyze their plans and other things I mentioned above. You should also see that the one you choose is affordable too!

    Hello Jane,

I didn’t know about your lost Blogger blogs. I think you know, that I’m on Blogger. And now I’m really afraid what you said above.

I have worked so hard on my blog. Now, it’s good enough. Of course, I don’t want to loose it.

Can you please help me in understanding what and how happened with your Blogger blogs? (Give any link if you have mentioned it, already)

Another question is, if I get a self hosted blog, then would I be able to shift my complete blog to self hosted blog?

Don’t forget to visit the link below.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Abhi, I didn’t actually realize that you’re on Blogger. Well, with the amount of effort you put on building a brand for your blog, being on blogger, I would say, is a serious flaw.

Of course, I’m not sure what your purpose of blogging is. If its to generate a stable income, I wouldn’t recommend staying on blogger!

Sure you can move your blog completely to your new self hosted domain *without losing SEO benefits*. I have a tutorial for this (although I wrote it for moving from self hosted domain to the other, it still applies). You can find it here - http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/move-wordpress-site-new-domain-complete-guide/

I really hope that you move soon :)

This has been interesting to read, a lot of people would just go for the first blog provider they find on a google search because its easy but I do think its useful to shop around!

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Harriet, always always we should research and find out what’s best in the market and what will best suit us, if we’re going to spend real money on that!

  • Samuel

I totally agree. Taking your blog to the level of success requires some type of reliable hosting service. I made sure that I was going to do that.

You’re not limited and the fact that you can do anything to your site makes it the top anyways!

And check the rating of the hosting like you said. Great job, Jane!

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

As a blogger who takes it as a business I’d always want security, top notch support and enough flexibility on my blog (and the files). Thanks for sharing your views Sam.

  • Rosemary Jayne

The other thing to watch out for is the free shared hosting. A friend recently emailed me telling me she was really happy and she could start a website for free. She got a free .co.cc domain (a what now?) and free hosting. Out of curiousity I signed up and tried it out. Their one click WordPress install was broken, support was offline (during the week - and I checked for over 24 hours), and so I tried to upload WordPress myself after spending 20 minutes looking for FTP details. It finally told me the “file was very very large” and it was going to take 2-3 hours to upload WordPress. At that point I ended up in slightly hysterical laughter and told my friend if she was that desperate I’d pay for her hosting for her.

Your host is definitely the most important thing to be careful of when choosing your blog, great post Jane!

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Haha… that’s really funny Rosemary :) Lesson learned!

    Hi Jane,

    Do your DDs: due diligence.

Get your research down and you can make a calm and confident decision. Ask around. Check out experiences of your buddies. In time, you can feel good about choosing a reliable host for your blog.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Rick

Well I must say that for first time blogger it would be nice to use free hosting sites, but as we get to know how blogging works, as well as how can we earn online there maybe that’s the time we look for a good hosting site. Well, I guess we need to get familiar first before engaging on anything.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Rick, in fact you need to go serious from day 1. Identifying about the importance of self hosting later when your blog is taking off will induce unwanted pressure and technical aspects to face. Trust me, I’ve traveled that road!

  • http://www.dmcihomes.com/about-us.php?our-distinct-features Dave Ventura

Thanks for sharing this informative post, yes the two faces of web hosting certainly has its own benefit and advantages to its individual user. For those people who do blogging by themselves and not thinking of making it as a lucrative hobby then good for them are those free web hosting. On the other hand, it not surprisingly to know that business minded people who wanted to use blogging as marketing arm would rather opt reliable paid web hosting to assure their domains safety.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Well put Dave, couldn’t agree more!

  • http://azillionideas.com Mike Maynard

Very interesting. I find hosting companies to be unreliable. the one I’m with are great when I get through to someone good in support but I can waste weeks of time if I get someone who doesn’t care. One I nearly bought from seems to have difficulty in answering the phone. they concentrate too much on sales and not enough on service; a big mistake when they are trying to do business in the UK.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Mike, seems there’s always a caveat in everything :)

  • http://www.wpwebhost.com/ Ricardus

Jane, you’ve prodvided some really great tips on finding a reliable web host. I think word of mouth from community bloggers are good too.

Thanks Jane by the way I really satisfied with services of Blue-host web hosting and I also preferred too most of my colloquies to use blue-host.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Yes I know many people using Hostgator and Blue host Rizwan; they’re nice!

Hi Jane, Excellent explanation. I remeber when i was on blogger i was newbie so just started my blog for testing purpose and seeking knowledge how to blogging. but many of my friends suggested me for move to wordpress and now i’m on self-hosted wordpress blog. Still i’m newbie in blogging and learning any suggestion or help would be appreciated from you.

    Thank you.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Ajnabii, most of the bloggers started with blogger and you’re not alone :) Just that we need to realize the importance of self hosting and make a move asap.

  • http://genuineseo.net Eddie Gear

I remember writing a post on how free hosting can spoil your blogging efforts. There is also another thing to note, self hosted blogs give you complete control over what you do with your sites. From my experience I think hostgator is a good hosting provider.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Eddie that’s so true and I love being my own boss when it comes to the look and feel of my blog.

  • http://www.withvic.com William

Before I’ve picked up which among hosting site are the best for my business, I’ve consulted friends who are already in the online business. I also conduct thorough research and read reviews and gladly, I’ve found HostGator the perfect one.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Yes I too recommend and like Hostgator. Their support is excellent.

  • http://www.slymarketing.com Jens Berget

    Hi Jane,

I was looking for paid hosting the minute I started to consider blogging. I don’t know why, but I guess I wanted more control and being able to talk to support if anything went terribly wrong. Now, I’ve switched hosts several times, and finally I ended up with HostGator. The reason is that I talked to several friends of mine and I listened to their advices and not just a review on a website. To me, reliable web hosting is one of the most important investment in any business. I do all my business online and it would be terrible if I couldn’t rely 100% on my webhost.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Jens, you did the awesome thing. I don’t see many people going for a self hosted blog from the start!

  • Prakash

    Hi Jane, Excellent explanation.
It’s necessary to have reliable web hosting. I learn a lot from here and you can say from you……….thanks Jane……………

  • http://www.bestonlinebusinessguide.net/ Noah

    Hey Jane,

I also lost a Blogger blog in 2010. I switch to webs because of its easy to use and simplicity. My other blogs are not with WordPress and I can attest that WordPress does really have difference when it comes to SEO.

    Thanks for the share Jane…
    Noah

    • http://www.bestonlinebusinessguide.net/ Noah

Ooops…what I meant is that, my other blogs are not with WordPress.

      Thanks

      • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

You’re right Noah. WordPress is a great platform with awesome features!

  • http://www.comptalks.com Bishwajeet

After a certain stage you need to move on to VPS if you have sufficient traffic coz shared servers won’t give you that much flexibility to work with.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

That’s right Bishwajeet, thanks for stopping by.

  • Ayesha

Pretty nice points. We must chose those sites which are reliable and have good name. Reliable site saves time and give helping material to their readers. The above post is very helpful.

The main advantage of a paid hosting - there is someone to make a complaint.
