5 Email Marketing Tips: Ignore These And You’re Doomed (Especially #4)

5 Email Marketing Tips: Ignore These And You're Doomed (Especially #4)

Email marketing is one of the best ways to bring new sales, promote your business to the next level and more importantly, engage with your existing customers. I like the third thing very much and I strive to establish genuine connection with my prospects and keep them engaged on a regular basis.

One of the great advantages with email marketing is that when you use it in a right way you will be able to build rapport with your subscribers on a regular basis. Building rapport is the sweetest thing with marketing - when you build rapport with your prospects you slowly build a loyal fan base. That is a very important aspect of any kind of marketing, and in particular email marketing.

However, not every internet marketer bothers to do it “right”. Of course, I’m not here to define what’s right and what’s wrong. Every business has its own right and wrong way of doing things.

But there are indeed some mistakes that are considered “mistakes” almost universally (duh!), and that can be fixed with some common sense.

I am going to talk about some of the really important (yet, ignored) email marketing tips that can help you to grow your business and increase your profits. If you are planning to implement an email marketing strategy then make sure you follow these tips to be successful.

#1 Test your campaign before you start

There is nothing worse and embarrassing than sending an email and then finding out that it has gone to the spam folder - or that you have made a silly mistake in the subject line or inside the email. It is very essential to test your emails before you could send them to your entire list. Send test email to each big email provides such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo.

I have test email accounts on Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo that I use for various purposes. After I finish typing my newsletter (or the autoresponder email) I make it a point to send myself test emails.

Of course, even after such testing sometimes my emails end up with some minor mistakes - but I make it a point to catch all the major, obvious and embarrassing mistakes BEFORE I send out the real email to my subscribers.

I do this every time before I send a newsletter out. And yes, one out of twenty times, I get my own mails delivered to the spam folder. I then go back to tweak the subject line and get rid of any overly promotional or too generic words.

You know what? - Adding “Thank You” to the subject once landed my email to the spam folder when tested with Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo!

Tip! Adding “Thank You” to your subject line might take your email to the spam folder [Click to Tweet this!]

If you find any errors, then it’s time to fix them before you send your emails to the main list. Make sure the links that you include in your emails are working. The more time you spend on testing, the more great ways you will find that can work best for getting more sales to your business.

#2 Make your emails personal

If you are looking for good email marketing tips that can help you to increase the sales then the most important one that you need to follow is to ensure that all your emails that go out are personal. People like it when you use their names and hence try to put in a little extra effort to ensure that you address the recipient by their name.

Always keep in mind to write your email for people and not robots. Even a small store draws more crowds mainly due to the personalized services. Hence you need to make sure that you respect your readers and keep them in mind when you communicate with them.

Now, if you have 10K subscribers you don’t have to write 10K separate emails with names on them. Email marketing tools like Aweber, GetResponse and the like make it easy for you to personalize your emails even if you send them in bulk. You could use tags like “firstname” or “name” so each email gets the name of the person inserted appropriately.

#3 Keep your texts short and sweet

Most of the users are not going to read the entire text in your email; you see, everyone is busy just like you. Hence it is very essential to include only the most important phrases in your email in an attractive way that can grab the attention of the readers. Too much text can get your email deleted fast.

Personally, I never take the time to read long emails. I skim them. If it is a short email I take the time to read it because I know it is not going to take longer. So…

Treat others as you would like to be treated :)

It is always wise to use concise keywords and make sure you highlight the important messages to reach your customers. Always keep the subject lines short, honest and attractive. Minimize the number of images in your email as most of the readers will not see the images; plus it makes your emails heavy.

#4 Be honest and realistic

Always make sure that your emails are honest and realistic. You can discuss about the problems that you face and how your products help you to overcome it everyday. This will help you to connect with your audience to a greater extent.

Tell stories and make your emails more personal. Of course, you don’t have to disclose your credit card number in an email, but keeping it personal feels much better.

Write friendly emails to your prospects. Don’t sound like a company! [Click to Tweet this]

Never try to deceive your audience with false promises. Be honest while you communicate with your audience; don’t have any hidden messages in your email.

Most of the affiliate programs have ready-made email that promotes their products and services. Never be one among them when you email your audience. First study your products and then draft your version of the email with a honest approach.

#5 Provide the option to unsubscribe

Always make sure that you have a clear and easy to find unsubscribe link that requires minimum “searching” from your users. It is always better to provide an unsubsribe option to your users rather than landing in their spam folder.

When your user’s find it difficult to unsubscribe they may end up dropping your mails into the spam folder. By doing so, your reputation as a sender would go down. In order to avoid being spammed, always follow the anti-spam tips while drafting an email (most email autoresponder services have assistance on this).

Takeaway

Though email marketing might seem like a very complicated process, it becomes much easier to handle when you follow these tips. On the flip side, ignoring these tips is no joke. You can easily spoil your reputation if you ignore these tips.

Most of us often wonder whether the emails are making it to the customer’s inbox and pleasing them with the email campaigns. By following the above email marketing tips you will be able to improve the quality of your email to your subscribers, and more importantly build an engaging subscriber base which is a great asset for your business!

    Hi Jane,
I have seen many email marketers use Image as their news letter which should not be used i think image works well but in some email providers we need to click display images link.
    BTW Nice Post..

    • Jane

Yup Nishant, that’s another problem with using images. Not all your subscribers would click the “Display images” link - and we would surely miss a big chunk of people to get to read the email.

    Hello Mam,
I have read couple of your article and I am a huge follower of you. very well written post and I liked the point of Test email as I also perform the same thing before sending it to whole list so to check for any errors or to see where it’s going.

    • Jane

You’re welcome Jeet :) Yes testing emails before sending out to the list saves a lot of chaos :)

  • http://southernaffiliate.com/1238/email-marketing-tips/ Jon

Liked your “include only impotents phrases …” line. I’m sure it was a typo and you meant “important” but so many emails I get from affiliates promoting various products, especially in the IM niche, would definitely warrant the ‘impotent’ description.

    • Jane

Thanks for spotting that Jon :) Corrected now! LOL.

  • http://www.howtostartablog101.net Alex

Great article Jane, I think one thing to mention that’s important in email marketing is to also try and create some value for the receiver, it’s not all about the sell, emails are much better received if there is some genuine value, in my auto responder series I have emails with just tips in them exclusive to my subscribers so they can take a break from being sold to and they can actually learn something new!! Thought it’s worth a mention!!

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Alex, you’re right! Our readers NEED a break from the usual selling pitches. I’m sure their inboxes are loaded with the salesy stuff.

  • jossef

Thanks for those tips, but honestly Jane, i am sure you are also receiving hundreds of emails daily, who follow this tips? it’s the best way to establish a relationship, and people will open your emails only if they know you, and to know you you need first of all to make a relationship and be the expert they seek.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Jossef yes relationships come first with any kind of marketing and email marketing is not an exception. Thanks for stopping by.

  • http://blog.red-website-design.co.uk Mark Ford

I’ve received email from lots of companies lately that don’t provide an unsubscribe link.

I don’t want to reply and ask them to unsubscribe me as then they have my personal details and will probably spam me more.

Any advice on how to deal with this?

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Ya I get a lot of these too. I simply click the “Spam” button and on some emails Gmail asks me “Mark as spam and unsubscribe?” - I click that option.

I ruthlessly Spam such emails (if I don’t remember signing up for that list), coz the more spam complaints that person gets the harder it becomes for him to survive in the email marketing arena.

  • http://toshibaonline.info Toshiba Burton

Great article, email marketing is definitely about testing & tweaking plus it’s a long process! I have also learned that sending way to many emails throughout the day & week bugs the heck out of people. But this is something that is being taught by a lot of big marketers out here. To each is own but I don’t agree with it, besides when you get into the habit of sending to many emails it can definitely confuse your audience.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Certainly! People are already confused and overwhelmed with a lot of information. It is not fair and effective to confuse them more. Less is more!

  • Moryom begum

    Hi Jane Sheeba

Thanks for sharing this useful post with us. I love your tips. I fond there are many email marketers did not provide the option of unsubscribe You know It should not do with their audiences.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Moryom, not only that they should not do that, but it is also again the CAN SPAM act. They MUST provide an unsubscribe link!

  • http://www.blogcooters.com/ Siraj Wahid

    Hey Jane,

Email Marketing is one of the top methods to increase sales. The big problem with people is they just write every thing for robots no matter it’s content or email. They just want to succeed in a night or two but robots won’t help them succeed, going ahead with keeping in mind what people think would help them. It’s true that no one is going to read lengthy emails so the first task of a email writer should be to write a compelling email in limited words which attract readers.

People are not going to believe on you if you don’t remain honest don’t go ahead with keeping in mind those worst affiliate programs who just keep bragging in their emails. Providing an unsubscribe option is a great idea though.

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Hey Siraj, quite true! I myself don’t read long emails. I don’t have the time to read long mails! So yes, I should do unto others what I expect others to do to me :)

  • http://www.guestcrew.com/blog Uttoran Sen

After the gmail inbox tabs, email marketing has become even more difficult. At this moment, without connecting with your email readers, there is no way one can expect them to even open their emails.

Emails need to be interesting, so that it hooks the readers - they should be looking foreword for the next email….

    thanks,
    Uttoran Sen,

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Uttoran you’re so right. Gmail tabs had made it quite hard to get people open up our emails. Building connection and trust is the only way to go!

  • http://www.adrianjock.com Adrian Jock

    Hi Jane,

    1) I would expect some readers to be confused by the article but I see that everyone who commented here is very happy :) Here’s my point… There are 3 tips mentioned in the headline, but the article includes 5. That’s pretty unusual, don’t you think? ;-) Well, not all five are often ignored by email marketers but which one of these 5 are the 3 mentioned in the headline? Does the reader know? You may want to help your readers finding these 3 tips :)

    2) I appreciate your tip “Test your campaign before you start”. Indeed most of the email marketers don’t do that and rely on their email marketing service provider.

Additional tip #1 related to the tip mentioned above: don’t add to Contacts your sender email address. That’s kind of whitelisting and many subscribers don’t do that. You want to check what THEY will get ;-)

Additional tip #2: check also the domain names from your emails (the links). Go to famous blocklists like Spamhaus and see whether the domain names from your newsletter (or whatever is it) are blacklisted or not. Don’t assume that everything is fine. Verify it!

    • http://www.probloggingsuccess.com/ Jane Sheeba

Yes I over delivered Adrian and that can be confusing :)

Thanks for the valuable additions, especially the tip #2. Yes, adding links to sites that are already blocked can put you in trouble. Thanks!

  • http://www.christmasday2013.org/ Arbaz K

I haven’t yet started building or working on an email list, but I am subscribed to a lot of email lists.
I have seen that most of them just want to sell something and are not interested in what we think. Only 1 or 2 really care about their subscribers and they reply to all their queries.
If you ever build an email list, try to build a relationship with the subscribers and you will make profits without selling anything.
    What do you say?

These tips are really good that often user forget at the time of email marketing and I want to add one more point that is ignored most of users, the sending time of mail, if you are not free at that time than scheduled your mail to send it later to all recipients.

    Hi Jane,

These are some great tips, especially the one about testing your email before you send it. I always make it a point to send myself a test email before I actually send it.

I’m still learning how to write personal emails and make the titles attractive to make people want to click through. As for images, I’ve never added any to the emails.

Thanks for sharing these email marketing tips, I know that they will help me improve my email marketing. Have a great weekend.

    Hello Jane,

These are very practical approaches in constructing ones email, specifically itself. However, I think one extraordinary thing could be added to your list. That is what you’re offering in exchange for them subscribing, specifically at the moment of opt-in?

    • I find it is useful to have a gift of some sort, relevant to your campaign at that time or to your entire topic / niche.
