5 On page SEO tips that don’t burn your pocket

by praveen| Join Jane on Google+

There are two types of search engine optimization methods that we usually can use; of which a lot is known of the offline search engine optimization, while the onsite search engine optimization is a matter of following simple tips and tricks. There are many SEO firms which helps you in optimizing your site by getting money from you but you can do some simple tweaks yourself instead of spending money from your pocket. Listed here are some of the most useful and simple tips that you must not forget to follow to get your website more SEO optimized for better traffic and page views.

1. Use relevant keywords for the domain name:

If you are thinking of performance, there are many of the other ways that you could improve the performance and does not matter even if you could not get an apt domain name. Meanwhile it is much more important that you should be getting the domain name right, that is the domain name should cover somehow the entire phrase of the keyword you are going to target.

So it is important in getting a good domain name with good keywords or phrases when you register for a domain name.

2. Title Tag must be optimized:

Title tag is one of the most important criteria for on-page search engine ranking factor and is not the headline of the blog post. Title tags appear in the top left corner of the browser, Most of the blogging platforms automatically update the title tags, which depends on the theme or template or plugins used.

Sometimes, for example, in the case of WordPress blogging platform, Plugins like All in one SEO pack automates Title tag optimization. While, this is not stringent that you should be able to optimize by yourself using HTML tags. You can also add manually but whatever the method may be make sure you add your targeted keywords in the Title Tag.

Jane’s note: Thesis theme takes care of title tag optimization in a more elegant way.

3. SEO optimized paragraph:

When you could grab the attention of the reader with your headline, you should also be able to capture and engage the reader by writing a good first paragraph in your blog post. This is the paragraph that will take the reader through the rest of the article. Just like writing a great headline, write a great first paragraph which will work for you.

It is perfect if you could SEO optimize the first paragraph, but rather is good to focus on the title with contents revolving around the main keyword phrase, which will make your article’s first paragraph both SEO optimized and a good one. Make sure you add your main targeted keyword in the first paragraph at least once.

Jane’s note: On optimizing the blog post titles for search engines, I just use a hands-free method. I use the Keyword Winner plugin, which makes it all super easy for you. You need not type blog post titles in darkness anymore.

Find out the least competitive keywords and rank higher for those in matter of hours, all from your WP Dashboard while you type your blog post. You can also monitor the post’s later ranking in Google from your dashboard. I highly recommend you to download this plugin.

For a detailed information about how to use this plugin and its features, please refer to a post I have written:

4. Use the Best Permalink Structure for SEO:

Apart from the keywords in the domain name, the use of keywords in the rest of the URL is also important and should revolve around the main keyword phrase and the use of the main keyword effectively in your headlines is also important. The permalink should always include the post name which must be optimized for keywords. All you need to do is to see that this gets correct.

Jane’s note: In order to get your permalinks optimized, go to Permalinks under Settings in your WP dashboard. Then select “custom settings” and paste /%postname%/ in the box. Click save, of course.

5. Always Use Keyword Phrased Alt-Text for Images:

The alt-text on the images are great especially for people who are on a low bandwidth and finds loading of images with alternative text which comes before by placing the arrow mark on the picture before the image opens completely or be downloaded entirely.

When you are doing this, your image gets optimized for images search. Use relevant keywords in your alt text and you will appear in image searches!

Jane’s note: I recommend also using the SEO Friendly Images plugin.

Google has recently announced that keywords in the domain name don’t carry nearly as much weight as it once did. Matt Cutts essentially said that they’ve ‘turned down the knob’ on the algorithm that affects SERP ranking for keywords in the domain name.

Well, yes Matt Cutts said it will be diminished, but it might still have a small affect for non-competitive keywords I guess,

I don’t know if exact keyword domain names will be important in the future, but they rank really well right now. I know, because it write for a blog that has the exact keyword in the domain name. The blog is less than one year old but it is the first one to show up in google when you search for that keyword.

As always, you’ve picked out some super advice here.
And I really appreciate the way you insert your additional comments for added insight and value.

I know I’m already using the permalink /%postname%/, but
I’ve got to jump over to my blog and check on the image SEO Friendly Images plugin.

Wishing you well-

Most of my traffic comes from search engines, and found the post title to be the largest contributor to on-pages SEO. When I started I didn’t know much about SEO, but am not making a conscious effort to ensure my posts are some one SEO’d.

Outside on-page SEO, I find that backlinks are the true key to ranking well. If you have the keywords in your post title and URL, when people link to your post and use either, you will automatically get backlinks with your keywords.

Jane / Praveen,

Thanks for some solid fundamental on page SEO tips. Sometimes it is a challnege to make a post totally SEO friendly but I guess if one keeps to the 80/20 rule then that will get us over the line comfortably.

I was wondering about Keyword Winner Jane so intresting to see your reference to this. I will read your other post on that, thank you.

Hi Jane,

Great post for on page SEO. It is soooo important and yet many bloggers still don’t do it.

All in one SEO Pack is a great free plugin to use, but many premium these will do the same thing, like you said.

I had never heard of Keyword Winner before, I will be going to read your post about it after I finish this comment.

Another great plugin for optimizing your title for your keywords is SEO Slugs, it removes the words like a, it, is and so on, from the URL title of your post, but tech savvy people can do this without the plugin, in case you are worried about page load times, which we know is also important to the search engines.

Thanks for sharing Jane and have a great day!

The book was called something along the line of Names for your Baby….The thought of giving another human being a name is a task that can be fun but at the same time a little or a lot daunting. Whats more its a task that has some level of responsibility attached to it as a persons name is something that has an impact upon them for a lifetime….sarcasmChoosing a name and domain name for your blog might not be quite as important a decision as naming your firstborn child sarcasm but it is something to consider carefully and is therefore something Id like to flesh out a little in this post….For the purposes of this post Im assuming that you have chosen to go with a stand alone blog and will not be relying upon a URL supplied by a blog hosting company AND that your domain name will be the name of your blog not always the case but usually the case and usually a recommended practice … …Having your own domain name is desirable for many bloggers for numerous reasons.

I definetly pays to have a good handle on SEO. I have been blogging for a while but at the end of last year the author of Search Engine Optimization: Your visual blueprint for effective Internet marketing sent his book through to me to read and review and I learnt a number of very valuable SEO lessons - http://www.ninetynineways.net/2011/01/search-engine-optimization-your-visual-blueprint-for-effective-internet-marketing-review.html
I would recommend that other people have a read through it too if they want to become more familiar on the subject.

Hey there - like the tips here - real straight forward and I would say are best practices for anyone with a website. One thing I noticed that did not appear on the list was the use of heading tags, specifically the h1. This does contribute as a ranking element and gives you the opportunity to optimize the page even more so for the spiders!

Hey,!

Those were some really good tips. I pretty much knew about all of ‘em before reading this post — but I sure learned something new.

As for me and my on-page SEO — I think I have some tips for you.

First of all, always write long texts. Writing a 100 word article and thinking that Google will adore it is completely wrong. That will never happen. Search engines, and especially Google, breathe content, and that is exactly why it is so important. I always aim at about 500 words per article.

Another tip which is relatively new thanks to the Panda Update is: don’t use lots of ad blocks on your website if you don’t have lots of content written.

If you, say, have an article consisting of 100 words — don’t go with three AdSense Blocks. That is extremely unwise.

Not only will your CTR be low — you’ll also be considered as a low-quality website by Google leading to you getting thrown out. I’ve experienced this myself before, so I believe I know what I’m talking about.

Hi Jane you talked about seo optimized paragraphs. You said their that keyword should be placed at least once. My question is what should be the maximum number of keywords that should be placed in the first paragraph?

Off-site SEO is where most, if not all, of your referrals will come from. Traffic filters through to your site from links back to your content and pages. The more your blog or site appears in references, tweets, social media, and so on, the more traffic you generate.
