There are more advanced ways to communicate for this generation of youth than the older generations. Today’s generation lives in a hybrid world where internet plays a crucial role. Here is a report of the study undertaken by Prof. Michael Hulme of the Institute for Advanced Studies, commissioned by charity YouthNet (the research was conducted with 994 youngsters aged 16-24):
75% said that they couldn’t live without the internet!
45% said that they felt happiest when online!
32% agreed with the statement: ” I can access all the information I need online, there is no need to speak to real person about my problems”
82% said that they had used the internet to look for advice and information for themselves and 60% had for other people.
37% said that they would use the internet to give advice to others on sensitive issues.
Over three quarters (76%) of the young people thought that the internet was a safe place ‘as long as you know what you’re doing’, and most believed that they were internet-literate and technology aware, with the skills to sense, check and look into the possibility of misrepresentation.
It seems that the relationship between youth and internet is just like fish and water. We shouldn’t call it network addiction, for we are living in an information century and we really need internet to do searching, reading, chatting or resting after study or working. Internet becomes an important part of our life.
But do you think sometimes the internet is taken so seriously that it has kept us away from communicating with our Parents, neighbors or our close friends who we should meet together frequently? We have been surrounded by computers, the internet, mobile phones and MMO games and have no time to do things with people in real life. Day after Day, we can’t live without Internet and become Digital Natives.
Well, I can’t say if it is a good trend or a bad one! What do you think?
